Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time launching July 18 worldwide on iOS
Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time will be released July 18 exclusively on iOS as a free-to-play title, developer PopCap Games announced today alongside the release of the CG launch trailer for the tower defense title.

Optional upgrades and in-game items can be purchased at the returning neighborly shopkeeper, Crazy Dave, but according to PopCap, the "vast majority" of the game will be free: Players will be able to access every level and kill every zombie without spending a dime.

The trailer features the botanist who saves the world from the zombie onslaught, as well as the man's ramshackle time machine, and Plants vs. Zombies 2 will take players through levels in past and future eras. Touchscreen power-ups will let players interact with zombies directly, instead of just fending them off by setting up defenses like pea shooters.

"We're confident that players will see the love and attention we've put into this game," said senior producer Allen Murray in a press release announcing the release date. "We've created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we're still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch."

You can watch the launch trailer above. PopCap originally announced Plants vs. Zombies 2 last August and said it planned to launch the game in the "late spring" of 2013. Last month, the studio shifted the release date to July.

WP Market Share Rising, Lumia Devices “Driving Success”

Εικόνα

Kantar World Panel, who compile stats on smartphone market share around the world have released figures for February to March, which shows Windows Phone making some gains, notably in the UK, which has seen an increase of 1.4% in just one month (March 2013 7% up to 8.4% in April 2013). And KWP also notes that Nokia’s Lumia range of Windows Phone is what is making the difference for the os;

“Looking at specific sales of smartphone devices, for the 3 month ending April 2013, Nokia’s Lumia devices were the key models driving success for the Windows OS.”

Looking at increases from this time last year shows Windows Phone has increased in the UK from 4% to 8.4% (up 4.4%) while France has gone up from 2.5% to 6.2% (up 3.7%). The US has seen an increase from 3.8% to 5.6%. These increases, while welcome, are not surprising. This time last year Windows Phone was still on version 7.5.

Another interesting point from the report is where these gains are coming from. Kantar report:

“Windows has begun to capture consumers from across the competitor set. Of those who purchased a Windows device in the last year, 42% came from a featurephone device, 25% from another Windows device and 23% from Android.”

This demonstrates that Windows Phone is a popular choice for first time smartphone users, and even for some Android users, but interesting that none of the new users in the last year appear to come from an iPhone.

Νομιζω πως το Android ειναι αυτο ομως που τρεχει πιο γρηγορα απο ολα και τους εχει παρει τα σωβρακα... ειδικα στην Ισπανια! :o

iOS 7 'flat' redesign may have leaked, image suggests

Εικόνα

For several months we've known that celebrated designer and Steve Jobs' right hand man, Jony Ive, has been heading the team redesigning the interface for iOS 7. It's been reported he's doing away with any signs of skeuomorphism -- that eye-roll-inducing design choice seen primarily in apps such as Calendar, Find My Friends and Podcasts.

iDownloadBlog has posted an image of what appears to be a redesigned version of the iOS home screen; a bad quality photo at best, but it clearly shows a flatter icon design, as rumoured. 9to5Mac went on to post a tweet with the image, claiming, however, that this was an early iOS 7 alpha, and "things have changed a lot since this was taken."

iDB went on to note:

When you look at the current state of stock apps icons, it seems that all of them were designed by different teams. Most of them have a different look. They don't have unifed features that tie them all up together. Some of them have a gloss effect. Some of them don't. Some of them have borders. Some of them don't, etc...

Judging by the image, it appears that icons are more unified and carry a cohesive theme. Recently, iOS developers have been straying from the native iOS design, in favour of interface designs that exhibit decidedly flatter features. Apps like Clear and Google's iOS offerings favour a cleaner, flatter design over iOS' mixed up concoction of skeuomorphic apps. iOS 7 is sure to put the platform back on track if it can deliver a unique and usable interface, and it's a good time to do so given looming competition from Android and Windows Phone.

Jelly Bean now on 33 percent of active Android devices, Gingerbread still leads

Εικόνα

Google's pushed out its latest survey of the Android landscape, and Jelly Bean is finally creeping up on Gingerbread for the crown. While Gingerbread accounts for 36.5 percent of active devices sporting Mountain View's OS, versions 4.1 and 4.2 stand just behind with a total of 33 percent, up 4.6 percent since last month. Ice Cream Sandwich is helping itself to 25.6 percent of the statistic pie, while Froyo, Eclair and Donut each trail behind with less than five percent combined. Now that Jelly Bean is within a 3.5 percent striking distance of the top spot, this may be the last time we see Gingerbread in the lead.

Deus Ex: The Fall is a mobile title

The next Deus Ex game is a mobile/tablet title. It was developed by Square Enix Mobile Europe in cooperation with Eidos Montreal, the folks behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution. They're calling Deus Ex: The Fall an action RPG; it will be the series' mobile debut.

The story picks up where the novel Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect finishes. It's set in 2027, where augmented former British SAS mercenary Ben Saxon works to find the truth behind a drug conspiracy.

Hamza and I saw this game a few weeks back. Square Enix says that it will be approached with the same attention as their boxed releases. Expect a high quality release. From what we saw, it looks really solid. And yes -- it's all touch controls. Stay tuned for our preview.

Deus Ex: The Fall will be released in installments, with the first coming this summer, priced at $6.99.
